The Fabulous Fox

The early 1960s journeys to Atlanta were a chance to see the South at the end of the Jim Crow era. Hwy 78 east was the only road from Birmingham to Atlanta, came in to the west side of town through the black neighborhoods. It's still segregated then. It looked at what I envisioned Harlem. Not predjudiced, this was just the black neighborhoods,... black stores... black churches. On Sunday mornings in Birmingham while Moose and I worked / tuned our cars, we'd listen to black Sunday morning church. ... very spiritual, very powerful... I remember hearing MLK on radio a couple of times. This is The South ; a great place even amid all the disparities.

A trip to see Unc Tony and Aunt Nancy was always fun. I'd get to see and feel the hustle of a real growing urban city. Atlanta ; the star and pulse of the progressive South. Unc was the manager of The Fabulous Fox so I always got to go see whatever new movie was showing. The Fox is absolutely a showplace! Built in 1929 for the Fox theater chain it had a distinctive moorish architechture, origionaly intended for the Atlanta shriners. Its ornate interior is so beautiful and the clouds still drift across the skyway. In the early 60s first run blockbuster movies ran and occasionally theater productions and a few concerts.

It has not changed in all these past years... maybe technical upgrades. It's still a grand place to visit.

*** follow up...
Also... it was this Fabulous Fox Theater, July 7, 1976 that Lynyrd Skynyrd took the stage and played one of the best concerts ever.... The One more from the road album... the gimmie back my bullets tour. A year and 3 months later a tragic plane crash ended the original sound of The Souths most famous redneck band. On this journey / odyssey I have been fortunate to hear Lynyrd Skynyrd a couple times and let me tell the gods honest truth; you haven't lived 'til you been hammered in the 12th row of a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert. ... as the country boys say, ... It just don't git no better.
