Alabama Jubilee Hot-Air Balloon Classic

Sunday May 26, 2013 Decatur, Alabama Point Mallard Park

A spur of the moment journey... the Alabama Jubille Balloon festival is this weekend; the largest hot air balloon launch this side of the Mississippii. There are 60 balloons set to launch. Let's load up and head out to see this.

As a fixed wing pilot for over 40 years now, ALL flight is still intriguing and must be observed, studied, experienced , and savored. A late start at noon, throw the cooler in the car and head north to Decatur, Alabama.

Point Mallard park is empty of balloons now from the early morning flight launch. Traffic not to bad... park and walk in. Get on the edge of the open field and wait for the afternoon launch.

Walk out onto the field... about 3 football fields of rolling grass. Some balloon teams driving out in their trucks/ SUVs / yukons, ect with trailer behind loaded with basket on a tow behind trailer. Start walking through the field past balloon teams beginning to park southeast bound and set up out of the back of their trailers. I'm learning alot here.

They are unfurling their ballons out of the truck at 310 degrees. Walk up beside a trailer with proud name "Gotta Luv It" , Kiman Kingsley from Miller, Missouri and he's breaking out his gear. "you mind if an old fixed wing pilot watches" I ask. Kiman, in overalls and an army cap says "I'm fixed wing but I love this. I need an extra hand; you wanna crew and help out?" "You bet!" with no hesitation I answered.

Begin with the setup pf the basket hardware to mount the burner structure to the top of the basket. There are 2- 40 pound propane tanks in the bottom of the basket. Ms Kingsley, busy running the ground crew set up said "get some gloves and let's unfurl the balloon".

Southern families working on a project together; I like that. The Missouri folks I know are salt of the earth people. Hard working and when it's time to play,... they go full out if it's a family cook out/ Bar-B-Que... or in this case... doing some hot air balloon flying.

We drag a 200 pound canvas bag 150' straight out, unfurling the ballon on the ground and start spreading it out . In a few minutes they crank up the portable fan and blow into the throat of the balloon pushing air into the balloon.

I'm out on the top end holding a lanyard to the balloon top letting the balloon fill up with fan air and keeping control of the balloon filling and rolling some side to side. Balloon is 1/2 full of static air and Kiman lights the torch; fires the propane burner putting hot air into the main balloon. Balloon lifts from the ground to upright. Kiman fires the burner as needed to get the ship right/ upright and into position for takeoff. A couple of minutes of getting the balloon upright oriented... a preflight inspection by pilot Kiman, checking everything possible... judging how the surface wind is blowing the plane/ balloon back and forth pre launch/ takeoff.

Some burner blasts to get the balloon full of hot air,... get it righted, plumb,... ready to go. Kiman on the final checklist,...There's a lot of stuff to check and not much time.... maybe a minute to make the All Systems Go call as a pilot... and liftoff. He's up. ....15' and up... 50' and they're on the way.

Looking up into the balloon lifting off directly above; Wow! Scan the field and a dozen balloons lifting off ... spectacular! What a sight! Vivid color balloons lifting off, ascending up to 800' to 1,000'... a dozen balloons in the frame... a rare sight.

Ms Kingsley & ground crew immediatly packing up, loading up in the chase crew. They will land on the north side of the Tennessee River some 30 miles away. This was a fantastic learning experience. Glad to help out and see this. I'll go back next time and crew for Kiman again.... maybe hook a ride in the basket next time.

We'll head to ABQ in sept for the festival !!! What impressed me was that it took about 15 minutes -- maybe less-- to launch; from a flat field,... to preflight inspection, to airborne in a really short time. Very efficient! These balloons can deploy fast!

Was good to be this close up and see this today. A good day! Kiman is a crop duster in southwest Missouri. I will track him down at the next launch and dig into what got him into flight. "Gotta luv it"... I want to know the rest of this story. .... and I'll report back next trip.

Walk over to the row of food vendors, crafts, and local exhibits; no funnel cakes for me today. Sheriffs dept has a confiscated RV & tables set up with a "no meth" display. This is a plague upon our land; our kids lack,... and desparately need some real leadership from dads and men.... getting interested in flying -- flying Hot-Air balloons -- would be a good start.

About 4;30 at the bandstand, the balloon pilots gather for the afternoon weather briefing; latest weather and winds aloft report from the FAA / FSS flight service station.

A couple of trial - small- balloons let go for confirmation. winds 6 knots @ 310 degrees. Good info. All clear. Visability 10+. Field is clear for launch / take off. That's the signal. all clear; let's go!

Y'all-Queda Dept:

Redneck Spring Dept:   These guys are some real revolutionaries. some real patriots. They took over the office building of a bird sanctuary - with a gift shop- claiming to be tea party patriots like at the Boston harbor, or Paul Revere... and in just a couple days call for help / donations of snacks... they need some crackers for the deer chili. Saltines, not the little oyster kind. I'm sure they'd like some doughnuts. They covet beef jerky.

They went from real revolutionary talk "kill or be killed",... to a redneck sleepover.

These guys need to do some serious time for breaking & entering.

They put out a call for help,... for donations of snacks.  ... and they got Fed-ex delivery of boxes of dildos.  what a revolution. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3BuL_RJg0U

old codger moment now

now you've got morning breakfast by the millennials...

Smoked Salmon pretzel  w/ bean sprouts... I don't think so.

Once a month I get to go to the Marine Corps League and have a real warriors breakfast; Ham, eggs, grits, biscuits, gravy... a real breakfast!  The rest of the month I have to eat healthy food of yogurt, oat gruel, crab grass etc...

"Doc" says my Gestalt Therapy is complimented by the Primal Scream Therapy.

And I look over at this dill-weed dufus that's wearing a jacket that says "grab life" on the back.

Space Shuttle Columbia

February, 2003

It was February 2003 and the US suffered the devastating loss of space shuttle Columbia which broke up and disintegrated during re-entry back into earth atmosphere.

A piece of foamed ice broke off during lift off and broke a re entry heat tile shield on the wing. During re-entry the hole in the wing burned/ turned red hot and burned through the wing making the whole ship unstable and tumbling.

It was a horrible disaster that somehow,... our good engineers at NASA should have been able to come up with a repair for return to earth and save the crew.

Everyone was just in disbelief and in shock.

The breakup disintegration occurred somewhere over Texas heading east toward Cape Kennedy, FL.

There's not much excitement here in a small town near Birmingham... so one of the Traywick twins, Alvis Traywick (not that motherscratcher Alvin Traywick) went out into the garage and gathered up a bag of leftover parts from building projects....   the leftover part of a lamp fixture, 4 to 6" inches of wire or co-ax cable, nuts, bolts washers, machine screws... the leftover box of parts, materials and stuff from working on houses, plumbing, cars, whatever... and drove around the next couple nights and threw these junk parts in peoples yards around town.

In light of such a disaster it was a little bit of dark humor/ satire to change the gloomy days. Small town can do that to you.

You never drink twice from the same stream.

Cajun Zydeco music 'splained

Dance for your Tribe

This is to 'splain Cajun Zydeco dance to all you taxpayers out there. There's infinite music styles... performed by many different bands/ artists/ musicians... but there's nothing like, nothing better than rockin' good Cajun Zydeco music.

Cajun Zydeco music is to be danced to.  This is NOT a concert where musicians play and you listen in your seat to their talent.

Concert musicians play great music... but you can't dance to their rhythm. People with no dance soul/ rhythm stand around at a concert, nod their head up and down with the beat while standing in one place tapping their toe... watching the few dancers and wishing they knew how to dance.

When you have a Cajun Zydeco band that knows how to play to a beat... a beat to dance to... a drummers 4 count beat... ...or a 3 count Cajun Waltz... with the bass player setting the lead rhythm of the music/song... the drummer setting the beat tempo... you have music/ a song that can be danced to.

The bands have a bass player, drummer, a lead Cajun Zydeco accordion squeeze box player who is usually the lead singer, ...often singing the French Creole slang dialect which is riveting, amazingly good... rhythm guitar.... Fiddle for a Cajun band, ... the Cajun Waltz' are captivating, spoon rub-board for a Zydeco band that like to rock. Not rock-a billy... but Cajun zydeco rock that makes you just want to get up and dance.  Some musicians play a regular accordion squeezebox as their preference... maybe more range. It's an artist thing.

Cajun Zydeco music/ bands play music that you can't stand at the wayside... you have to get up and get onto the dance floor with a lady and dance; it is that powerful. The bands are really good, versatile and often will play some Cajun Blues or some rock favorites.

*************
Tonight's dance features Jeffery Broussard and the Creole Cowboys  Band from Louisiana. These guys really put on a good show and their dance music is a wonderful favorite of the Birmingham Cajun Zydeco dancers. Thanks guys for playing Birmingham, AL. Come back often.

*************

When you have the right Cajun ZYDeco band... and the music beat is just right... and you have a lady dance partner that knows how to follow your dance lead... and you're in sync with a dance partner... you know how to lead with the music, and your lady partner knows how to follow your lead... and you dance to the rhythm of the music with a favorite lady; it just don't git no better than this!  I Gar-ron-TEE!!!

... and the ZYDeco music is fantastic.... and you connect with your dance partner with the beat rhythm... it all comes together at a point... you move in sync with your dance partner... a very intimate connection/ language that is not spoken... dancing can make that happen. Cajun Zydeco music is a mix of cultures, just like the Creole culture; a mix of Native American Indian - some Seminole, Creek, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Cherokee, some Spanish, French, African slave, riverboat gambler, throw in a few British and Confederate soldiers, some Acadian... all mixed to come out as one of Americas truly unique cultures.

I've told young students, if you want to understand a culture.... you learn their dance.

During the Summer of '67 working in the shipyard drydocks of Mobile, Alabama I became an official coon-ass Cajun. Working hard putting on keel plates of ships... hanging around the Cajun guys in the shipyard... goin' out on the causeway and drinking draft beer with the Cajuns taught me one of the most important of life rules; you live in the moment. No one ever said those words, it was just a lifestyle to adapt to. You learn to enjoy life... the hardships and the Laissez les bons temps rouler!" is a Cajun expression meaning "Let the good times roll!" It strongly conveys the "joie de vivre" ("joy of living") attitude that pervades south Louisiana. It is mostly associated with New Orleans. (THE BEST CITY IN THE WORLD! according to Cajuns), but my preference is Mobile, ALabama. Cajun Zydeco music is most centered around Lafayette, Homa, Lake Charles, ect... Louisiana.

My main Cajun buddies adopted me into their Cajun culture and I was changed forever.

Drinking draft beer in the juke joints with Willis and Somerville, on the Mobile causeway, Plateau, Telegraph road,... The Rocket Club... Chickasaw, Creola, Satsuma, Saraland, Pauls where you could buy a pound of pound jumbo shrimp for $1... steamed in beer... with a pint of cocktail sauce. Eat bayou seafood 'til you were stuffed. Draft beer, Cajun music.... Cajun women.... at 17 I thought I'd found heaven.

The Cajuns all had family,... farms, cattle, shipyard workers... they all worked hard and when Friday night came... they knew how to live in the moment. Drinking 'till dawn, Cajun women... you haven't lived 'til you've dated a Cajun lady!

You fight and fuck 'til dawn.... get up... drink a couple of Jax beers for breakfast... and go out again on a new day and do it again all over.  I learned this life at 17.

This was '67 and I knew I would be swept up into the Marines and into Viet Nam.

When I got to Parris Island I thought... I've lived in Prichard, Alabama... I can handle this.

The Cajun Zydeco bands come up into The South pretty regular to play music festivals, city/town festivals, and individual dance bookings. A weekend circuit of Birmingham Friday night, Atlanta Saturday night, Huntsville Sunday night was a regular circuit by the bands when they came through Birmingham for the ACME = Association of Cajun Music Enthusiasts.

Here at Tracks of the StoneBear one of the many interests of Uncle Hargus' study is archaeology and the many cultures, subcultures, and tribes. If you want to understand a culture of people; learn their dance. Learn how they dance, and why. ?Do they dance to get ready to go to war? ?Do they dance around the fire ring for a wedding? ?...or do they dance around the fire ring while they burn an enemy captive at the stake?

To dance for your Tribe is a great honor; for your Tribe, for yourself.
