It
was February 2003 and the US suffered the devastating loss of space
shuttle Columbia which broke up and disintegrated during re-entry back
into earth atmosphere.
A
piece of foamed ice broke off during lift off and broke a re entry heat
tile shield on the wing. During re-entry the hole in the wing burned/
turned red hot and burned through the wing making the whole ship
unstable and tumbling.
It
was a horrible disaster that somehow,... our good engineers at NASA
should have been able to come up with a repair for return to earth and
save the crew.
Everyone was just in disbelief and in shock.
The breakup disintegration occurred somewhere over Texas heading east toward Cape Kennedy, FL.
There's
not much excitement here in a small town near Birmingham... so one of
the Traywick twins, Alvis Traywick (not that motherscratcher Alvin
Traywick) went out into the garage and gathered up a bag of leftover
parts from building projects.... the leftover part of a lamp fixture, 4
to 6" inches of wire or co-ax cable, nuts, bolts washers, machine
screws... the leftover box of parts, materials and stuff from working on
houses, plumbing, cars, whatever... and drove around the next couple
nights and threw these junk parts in peoples yards around town.
In
light of such a disaster it was a little bit of dark humor/ satire to
change the gloomy days. Small town can do that to you.
You never drink twice from the same stream.
