Mizen Head

Day trip down to Mizen Head lighthouse.

Left Cork, Ireland mid morning. Walked into downtown Cork yesterday & want to get away from the somewhat urban Ireland and out into the less touristy Ireland.

Headed south/ southwest on hwy N71 and go through some small towns.

Very Irish small towns

Down through Bandon, Skibberdeen.

Turned left at Ballydehob onto road R592.

Now on the Mizen Head peninsula.

Driving Ireland down Mizen Head peninsula, r592 I think, stopped at this cove for a couple pix.

Somewhere around Toormoor the road came right onto the North Atlantic ocean.

This craggy peninsula fingerling was our 1st view of the Irish coastline. The North Sea.

The craggy rock cliffs are something to see the first time.

Now here's the good part. Was not on the map,... was not looking for this...

There is an Alter,... a Portal Tomb on the bluff overlooking the cliffs.

In the field overlooking the cove was this ancient Alter/ Tomb. This one was not even on the map ... probably why it's not covered w/ tourists.

Was a treat to see this Alter, & another one a week later up north. Also see the Poulnabrone post.

These are sacred archaeological sites. Scattered all through Ireland from the 25,000 year history.

These altar/ tombs are legendary as to many places recorded historical sites.

Some have certain artifacts discovered that place distinct/ defined time/ era.

Mizen Head... Mizen Head lighthouse... on this peninsula is the Southernmost point of Ireland.

Fastenall is a lighthouse on an island. Mizen Head is still on mainland terrafirma.

So, this southernmost point of Ireland has been navigated by mariners.... The Vikings, Norsemen, The Goths, and god knows whoever sailed a ship/ boat around south Ireland weather to rob and plunder, capture for prize, or trade.

Historically, this is getting exciting to see this.

Just because you wander doesn't mean you're lost.
