on board MV - Marine Vessel Blue Puttees on the North Sea

Put to Sea

Port aux Basques, Newfoundland headed back to North Sydney, Nova Scotia - Cape Breton

Leaving port you get a great view of just how harsh, demanding and raw an enviornment Newfoundland is. The close area around Port aux Basques is stripped barren of trees. Sheer rock cliffs line the harbor. just a thin coat of soil, grass.... but it's sheer rock under. The weather hammers this place hard.

It's gray overcast, gloomy in the afternoon.... wind 20+ some light drizzle at times. ... this 1,000 % better than the trip over ; Let's go to the beach!

The trip over was in a storm and provided a realization of just how horrible the North Sea can be. It's calm today; seas 2-4 feet, visability 30 miles so this is a good day -- sea conditions are good ! Reports are that we may run into rain / worse conditions on making port in North Sydney. We'll see. But right now I'm glad to see some distance ... that was fogged over last week. The highlands of the Long Range Mountains are in the backgrownd... green trees and forests there.

Leaving port you get a good view of the bright colored houses.... no trees or shrubbery . Then the Lighthouse on the point. Look back at town and see the church steeples. Gray, spooky... you get the feel that nazi submarines are laying in wait out in the north sea. The dark gloomy gives that sinsiter feel. Glad I got to see this.

As we're leaving Port aux Basque, here comes the MV Highlander inbound to make port.

Orange enclosed lifeboats; glad to see. The trip over in the bad weather really brought home the realization.... you go down in the North Sea; you die!

You never drink twice from the same stream.
