Port aux Basque return #81
MARNE 25 #81 http://marsbt.blogspot.com/2011/08/81.html
Thursday July 14, 2011
Port aux Basques, Newfoundland 2 the return to North Sydney, Nova Scotia
Heading south on TCH 1, Trans Canada Hwy 1 down to Port aux Basque.
Have to make an afternoon port call to catch the MV Blue Puttees back to North Sydney, Cape Breton - Nova Scotia
Port aux Basque' history goes back into the 1,600s as a port for the whalers,... the whaling ships of the day.
This is a hard life place. You look at the terrain and it's NO trees -- just a few tuckamores- from the harsh winds / erosion... about a foot of dirt on the most god awful hard gray sandstone.... look at the cuts in the roadways.
This is an extreme environment. The people here are hard; it is not daquries on the beach here. Rugged souls.... it's been this way since time! Glad I got to see this.
