Friday September 13, 2019

Rest up day in Sarria, Spain. A day w/o a 26+ pound backpack is appreciated but there are still things to supply up on, laundry, ect... and we'll see some of the sights around town.

Steps staircase. a escaleria da fonte. There are 7 levels of stairs and I rested a few times climbing up. This IS the Camion route, The Way, through old Sarria.

Chapel/ iglesia

Iglesia de Santa Marina. The church was closed in the morning but later on we briefly saw inside when a service let out.

Next to the church is this shaded park.

Chapel/ iglesia/ @ old city square

The "Sarria" sign is at an old city square, actually... on The Camino, you take right at the sign and go up the hill.

But.... 125' across the street/ square/ Right turn is the Church of San Salvadore. Stop and get your Camino passport stamped. The stamps of the last ?9? towns are required to get a Camion certificate of completion.

Up the hill 100 yards overlooks the new Sarria.

At the hilltop Camino route is where they have the town street mercado/ market and fair like every other weekend. Also... it's closed off but the old Knights Templar castle is on the crest of the hill; the highest point in Sarria?  I't's know as the Fortress of Sarria.  see below.

Down the hill 200 yards is the Monastery of Mary Magdalena of Sarria

monastery is really neat. This part was for kids school.

The patterns of rock work floors are amazing.

Rock pattern floors around the courtyard.

All these Camino iglesias/ churches are wonderful. visit them ALL!

Knights Templar fort/ tower; The Castle of Sarria/ Fortress of Sarria is closed off but you get a glimpse of it.

King Alfonso IX of León died in Sarria in 1230 while making a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

Outside cafes along the river through town.

 Several murals along the walkway.

Pilgrims dinner 9euro, a good finish of the day.

You never drink twice from the same stream.

Just because you wander doesn't mean you're lost.
