Haines, Alaska 2   Chillkoot

On the ALCAN Hwy turn South at Haines Junction onto Hwy 3.  You actually cross a few miles from The Yukon Territory into British Columbia, through customs again, then near Haines back into Alaska, the United States, and Customs again.

Haines is on the North End of the Alaska Panhandle, the Northern end of the Inside passage route .

The Haines highway drive is very picturesque and unique.

The Chilkat river a few miles before the town is famous for bald eagles, good eagle watching when Salmon are spawning in the river.

Haines is a small Alaska town 5 to 7 blocks wide, some 15 blocks long.

The Haines Marina on the Lynn Canal bay Is picturesque of a saltwater port marina. This is on The Gulf of ALaska, gateway to The Pacific Ocean.

Haines has a deep water port that connects the Alaska Marine Ferry Highway, and cruise ships dock at Haynes.

After errands in town to library to check email, food supplies, restock fishing supplies of spinners for the last chance for salmon fishing on this road trip.

Head out Highway 7.

Stop and check out the Alaska Marine ferry terminal. Reserve a spot on the MV Fairweather to Skagway in a few days.

About 5 more miles out Highway 7 to Chilkoot State Park and find a wonderful campsite right on the edge of Chilkoot Lake. Beautiful Arctic Alpine mountains, cascading streams down the mountain.

Don't waste any time and get fishing gear out and walk down to the lake egress,  going into the river and down to the bay, the Gulf of ALaska and start salmon fishing.

Filet them right on the bank for supper.

It's combat fishing again. We're used to this now it's so crowded fishing on the bank. What we're not used to is Van loads, busloads of tourists standing above us,... tourists’ on the shore observing real fisherman fishing for salmon.

Talk about touristy, this is a little too much.

Back to the campsite and the Arctic tundra undergrowth. Walking around all the tundra is like walking on a 3 inch shag carpet, or a sponge.

The view of Chilkoot lake from the campsite is beautiful, Alaska beautiful. Stunningly beautiful. Fog clouds, wall clouds along the glacial mtn tops.  temperature is cool...  to a chill.

Yes, you can get tired of eating salmon.

Water temperature is cold and getting back in and dry feet and warming up is good.

Well head back into the town tomorrow to see some of the other local places and Haines features. It was a good day.

You never drink twice from the same stream.

Just because you wander doesn't mean you're lost.
