Valdez 1.
Valdez Alaska is one of the most unique places I've seen on this journey. The town motto is “Valdez, Alaska even Mother Nature has favorites!”. After a few days in Valdez it holds true.
Valdez is a small Alaska town, about 4,000 people, a fishing town for commercial and a lot of sport salmon fishing.
Probably best known as the terminus of the Alaska pipeline storage tanks and oil terminal for oil tankers loading crude and heading south to California to refineries.
It is the Gulf of ALaska, Pacific Ocean Ice free Port most notably Prince William Sound, site of the Exxon Valdez oil spill back in 1989 .
Valdez is very picturesque. A few blocks into the town and you're at the city of Valdez Marina.
A neat looking site with the ChuGauch mountains, snow capped Glacier mountains across the bay.
We walked around for 30 or 40 minutes and saw most of the few blocks down by the city marina and harbormaster's office.
On the southside of the marina, a causeway road are the commercial Cannery Row factories that process all the commercial salmon for Fishers in Valdese. Salmon is a huge industry for Alaska exports, and it attracts A lot of tourist fisherman.
If you go to Alaska you have not seen it until you go to Valdez.
We took a charter boat to the Columbia glacier icefield, a phenomenal day, that will require other blog posts. you can see them click here https://sbtrof.blogspot.com/2017/10/columbia-glacier-3-ingress.html.
You never drink twice from the same stream.
Just because you wander doesn't mean you're lost.
