The Close Encounters film drew on the mystical power of this place. They got it right! It's still hard to explain this place. It is powerful to see this place. From 20 miles out your curiosity peaks and it draws you in until you're standing at the base... in awe of this magnificent phenomenon. The Cheyenne call it "Bear's Lair".
This is was and is still sacred ground to native American tribes -- Arapaho, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Crow, Lakota, and Shoshone-- and hold ceremonies here in June. The pioneers were afraid of the tower because of it's mystical aura. These pics can't begin to describe the feel you get being there... hiking around the monument.
