Cadillac Mountain
Acadia Nat Pk, Maine coast
Indians were here 4,000 years before Christ.
About 1,000 BC were the Red Paint people... ushering in the Abnaki indians. The European settlers 400 years ago are newcomers; the new kids on the block.
Of the island of Mount Dessert, 12 miles long / 16 miles wide,... Cadillac mountain at 1,532' is the pinnacle of Acadia. ... THE highest mountain on the eastern US coast. There are slogans that it's the 1st place to see sunrise in the US. --also see the post from Lubec, Maine-- it is THE most eastern TOWN in the US so ... both are unique.
Spent last night on Somme Sound, the only fjiord in the US, that divides the east from west coasts of the island and wanted to see this today before heading up the coast toward Canada.
I thought the view of coastal Maine couldn't improve from Mt Battie at Camden... Wrong. This is a really wonderful place to see.
Acadia just grabs your spirit and calms you down. It is serene here in the cool breeze. Very peaceful... until tourists barge in and ruin it. Not being snooty here, but I treat places like this as a natural cathedral; and have some reverence in a magnificent place like this. You sit for a few minutes in quiet and take in the majesty,... then obnoxious people walk up too close and talk loudly, even get in a squabble about they wanted a diet coke instead of pepsi. ... or even worse... yelling into a cell phone to keep searching for the "Ranch" potato chips at wal mart.
The red granite peak is worn bare of trees... wind erosion. Small ground cover at the summit. Visability 20,... 40? miles... you can see the Maine coast and Nova Scotia to the west. Bar Harbor, Maine is at the base of the mountain. And that's a 4 masted windjammer sailing in the bay.
A good stop!

You never drink twice from the same stream.
Just because you wander doesn't mean you're lost.
