Day 1. Heading to Iceland.
Up normal 0630 hours. Morning coffee. News wrap to see what's going on in the world.
Shuttle to BHM to catch Delta to Atlanta, Lv 1:40, ARV ATL 3:45/ 1545 hours.
LV ATL 4:15/ 1615 hours, Arv LGA Laguardia 6"35pm/ 1835 hours.
Transit by shuttle service... Pvt auto to JFK.
JFK...What a nightmare. Check in,... Customs/ security check in lines...
~~8pm~~ lobby, waiting... go find Delta flyers club. Wow...
Take 30 minutes to sit down and rest. Glass of red wine.
Buffett is wonderful; Thank you Delta... theere's a reason we fly your airline!!! Nibble on a couple of tapas size servings.
Pit stop, restrooms refresh not rushed. ...good to catch a breath during the rush of travel.
Back to gate. waiting 30 to 45... Delta 246 to Iceland 10:25pm/ 2225hours
Pushback, dark , airport lights, taxi, and were of to Iceland.
This has been on my list for a long time... since the late 50s/ 60s... see the Iceland Marines WWII post and I'll explain why it's time to go see Iceland. I've been wantin to see Iceland all my life; it's go time.
Long night flights to Europe... not good sleep.
About 0300 hours could see some stars from the port side window. ... bigg dipper pointing norht to Greenland. interuped sleep, cabin dark, quiet...
~~0630~~ can see the band of reddish orange horizion of sun coming up over Europe.
Daybreak... Iceland shoreline of the North Atlantic, feet dry/ over land now.
0805 ARV Keflavek KEF. A long day... up 24 hours now and ARV Iceland, tired but ready to go see.
KEF airport is European modern.
Walking down corridors to baggage, customs... sunrise in oval window.
Long lines to check in.
Finnaly down to lobby... Gate 1 group gathereing . 30 mins... mini van.
Golden people sculptures leaving airport... Silver aluminum "Peach" sculpture and we're headed west on Hwy 41 to Reykjavik.
Flat terrain,... greenish amber color... It's lava fields covered in moss/ lichens.
Black mountains to the right/ south.... ocean views to the left/ north.
interesting drive seeing landscape. NO trees.
25/ 30 minute drive... into Reykjavik.
Hill on left is a dome.
Left turn... couple of quonset huts are small businesses,
Can see airport tower a mile away.
ARV at hotel, right on the RVK airport south side. Green/ clear glass facing of building. Later would find out this is Air Iceland property/ hotels/ main office building on right side of complex.
Check in. WE'RE HERE!
