RailRoads. Trains...

See AMTRAK NOL blog for a separate post on riding Amtrak http://sbtnol.blogspot.com/2011/03/city-of-new-orleans.html

Nothing defines America more than Railroads... The Trains.... that run America. ... That built and developed America.

I always like to see the towns that built up in the pioneer west from the train routes. When I see the trains running the raw commodities of the land to the industial sites that will process, then ship goods on down the line... I see the pulse of America and what made us a great country.

Crossroads of Rivers and Highways,... and a rail line meant growth. A distribution point. A Market... for raw grain, lumber, minerals, .... heading out for industial centers to be processed for more product refining... or finished goods. RailRaod Trains are America... .... and I love to see the engines... themselves a truely American built demonstration of engineering ingenuity and power... on the move. humping w/ 2 to 3 engines grinding that raw power through the remote routes.

Just the history of building the Railroad routes is enough for volumes of books that tell the story of developing the frontier. The history of cultures and towns built from the development of the railroads is paramount from the present day modern city / hubs, to the forgotten ghost towns. All w/ their own unique history.

On this Journey West saw a lot of Union Pacific Routes. Some Northern pacific routes and depots. Saw history of some grand Railroad stations that defined cultures when Rail travel was truely a magnificent time in America.

There was a time when Ladies and Gentlemen dressed to board a train and travel... I get on planes sometimes now and see people in NFL team logo gym suits carrying walmart plastic bags for luggage. Ugh.

I'd like to go back 100 years and travel by trains. ... just for the dignity.
