The Dalles , Oregon Elev 100'
Maryhill st pk Wa across Columbia River from Biggs, OR
7am 65* cool breeze 10 to 15+ 250' from Columbia river. nice
1st thing was stop & get a chinook salmon from Yakut.
Across bridge ot Biggs, OR . Biggs is a crossroads stop for trucks / traffic heading down into central OR. Not much there but a few truck stops/ motels for truckers.
onto 84west for a run down the Columbia River to The Dalles, ORegon.
Beautiful gorge/ brown Basalt rock, steep terraced / stair step by erosion canyon walls, and winding blue/green Columbia river on right.
Wind has picked up quickly as sun comes out & is now 20 to 30+ gusts to 40 at 10am
Pass by The Dalles Dam project.. a few of the turbines flow whitecap water through the chutes.
The Dalles, Or .... unique town... has the look and feel of Cannery Row. Huge Oregon Cherry proccessing plant w/ hundereds of White Refrigerated box cars in a train switching yard right by the processing plant & Silos. Riverfront / Ship docking berths are adjacent. Oregon Cherries are RIPE... and being shipped out all over the world from right here on a huge scale.
Bought a couple lbs of cherries from roadside produce vendors picked hours earlier.... the Taste of FRESH Oregon Cherries is great!
The shippers areworking / shipping by the hour. Was only in town a couple hours & saw several trainloads leaving town; ... & ships heading down / oout the Columbia.
The Dalles is an old frontier town. In territory days it was Old Wasco County. Was going to be either county, or state of Whitman ... circa 1854 to '69. Was the largest "county" in the US territory. Went from the Crest of the Cascades, to the Continental divide-- over to the corner of Yellowstone... some 130,000 square miles. & was divided up in the states formation politics.
But was an important post on the Oregon Trail.
Native American Tribes in this area were Yakima, Nez Perce, Umatilla.... Chinooks & several more.
Up on the ridge overlooking the columbia River Gorge is Spectacular Scenic.
