Canyon de Chelly pronounced Canyon de "shay"
Of the days of my journey...
of the whole time of my life, this day will be in the
top 10 best days.
I've seen a lot of things / places/ spectacles in my time. Saw Many Launches of... and the space shuttle
explode in Florida.
In 1974 standing 40 feet from the Talladega 500 finish line saw David Pearson and Richard Petty bump and rub sides and "trade paint" at 190+mph in the Tri- Oval on the final lap... & the dash to the finish line-- ... and The King won by a nose. That's back when it was real racing! That was before they slowed them down to be "competitive". Some say this was one of the greatest races ever... it was something to see that electric blue #43 STP Dodge thunder by.
Witnessed and served in the Last of the Old Corps with the Old Breed. Semper Fi, 'Til I Die.
Saw James Brown in concert a few months after he'd done time in prison,,, electrfying....
... talked and kidded with other Marines on the deck of the USS Iowa BB-61, six months later a charge cooked-off in the # 2 gun turret.
Many unforgettable events & places but Canyon de Chelly, Navajo Nation, Chinle AZ was beyond spectacle. Sublime. Almost unreal that some place could be that beautiful & peaceful to see.
This equals the Grand Canyon... Maybe better, but there's only 100 people here all day
??? it's just an unknown gem. It's hard for me to put into words what I saw
today.
After went to Bashas to buy a few sandwich items & fruit/ apples ect... The Navajo tribe are an amazing people / culture. Listened to friends talking in Navajo language and am blown away. These are the real neat Americans!
Met and made friends with several Navajo. Talked w/ Jason whose Uncle was one of the Marine Corps "Code talkers". Told him how proud I was of his family, and assured him that his Uncle had saved the lives of countless thousands of Marines by his families service and sacrifice for our country. The next day, one of the "Code Talkers" died, and the flags were flown at half mast in the Navajo nation... NOT in the United States; but it was the Navajo Nation that honored that Marine.
also see post about Navajo "Code Talkers" http://stonebeartracksrof.blogspot.com/2011/03/burger-king-kayenta-az-monument-valley.html
Met Erik that made a "Healing Hand" stone for me to take to a buddy who had lost a Son. Erik said "This will help heal the hurt in his heart". I don't think our modern day doctors understand the powerful medicine this culture knows. Said prayers today for Sons lost. Looking at this place, ... The Sureal , Sublime, Peace... the Tranquility here... Have yet to see as peaceful a place as this was, ... and knew without doubt; They did NOT die... They just went on ahead, and they came through here.
