Charlottetown 2, Prince Edward Island - PEI- Canada
The plan was to tour PEI in a counter- clockwise circle. Well, leaving Lord Selkirk park near Belfast... headed west to Charlottetown to supply up for the PEI leg of the journey. Charlottetown was supposed to be the end stay on PEI; getting here early gave a perspective of the island history and culture.
Coming into town across the bridge over the Hillsborough river ... 1st image / impression is the huge white Irving company petroleum refinery / storage tanks.
To the left is a cruise ship at the pier. It's a huge ship. Maybe 8 stories above waterline. Drive on into town on the main boulevard. ... past U of PEI.
Charlottetown is such an amazingly interesting place. The articles of conferderation of Canada were drawn up here; thus... Confederation hall right in downtown square is a stopping point; I have to see this.
A distinct government building, Province House built from PEI quarried stone.
Adjacent are cathedral churches of Brownstone building in downtown. Some other majestic churches adjacent... so important in the formation of Charlottetown.
The park out front with the veterans memorial statue. Boulder rocks from each province circling the fountain.
Nearby blocks along Queen street... Row house buildings of distinct victorian architechture.... businesses on the street level.... urban housing / apartments on upper floors.
The West side of confederation Hall block is the Charlottetown library and the theater. Ann of Green Gables play is in season and on the markee. Also The Full Monty.
The brownstone / brown - reddish sandstone rock quarrried on the island is prominent in confederation hall and the adjacent churches.
A block of street open air cafes.... beautiful historic buildings... street jazz musicians playing to patrons dining al- fresco on the street; a really nice town - center.
The surrounding blocks have houses and urban apartment / condos that are really unique gothic victorian architechture... some like row houses. Many in bold , bright colors.
The university is close by and the energy level is from the students in this part of town. This would be a great place to attend college and study! It reminds me of past journey with Tres Hombres to Vancouver, British Columbia, due West some 2,500 miles on the west edge of the continent. Canada has some really unique and disguinished cities and cultures.
Of these several and distinct cultures... defined this part of the world. The English, French, Scotch, most prevalent... many others.... Dutch , Irish, and others. All of these peoples converging in this entry point and crossroads to North America ,.... encroaching / displacing/ invading the lands of the Native Ancestor / First Americans... the indegenous Tribe in / throughout the Maritimes ; The Mi'kmaq - pronounced Mik - ma. You could see descendants of the Mi' kmaq, their cultural customs, and history all through this region. They are a unique , proud tribe.
