Thermopolis, Wyoming

Horse Whisperer 1 Buck Brannaman

In the ealier post "Gifts Thermopolis Wy" we covered the several events of a fantastic day. This part of the day required an extra post by itself.

Started out the day at 7;30am at the Thermopolis, Wyoming Hot Springs County airport. a Boy Scout Troop pancake breakfast and sponsored "Fly In" had me ready at the start. about 20 planes in and then... a Navy T-28 trainer does an inbound fly by at about 275mph. ... then gets in the landing pattern, lands on runway 1, taxi in and parks on the ramp flight line.... 30' away... I can touch the wing as he swings around to stop. A really beautiful plane. Could walk all around and inspect. Excellent !!!

After a couple hours, went on... and hiked up "Round Top" you can see behind the airport / T- 28. About an hour up steep climb and worth it. Nobody is there. Wonderful!!!

Airport below to the east. Thermopolis and Hot Springs to the south, and the Wind River Canyon with bighorn river flowing into Thermopolis. Snowpack on the Owl Mountain Range some 20 miles away westward. Stunningly beautiful.

Overlooking Thermopolis, WY... Wind River / Bighorn River... Hot Springs.... geologic strata in every direction is beautiful.

Coming back down the mountain about 11am into Thermopolis, pass by the Hot Springs County fairgrounds. Horse trailers all over the place. Maybe getting ready for a rodeo. Let's go see a few minutes.

Talked with a couple of real cowboys sitting on the back of a horse trailer and asked if anyone minded if I took a few pix. they said sure. Walked around and took some pics. interesting.

Out here in Wyoming, you can judge/ size up a man / woman by their horse trailer. I see a lot of character in the horse trailer.... which bears out the character of the person... and their horse. ... just my theory. I've seen dirt poor rancher cowboys that take better care of their horse , than themself.

Taking pix... not bothering the riders grooming and saddleing up their horses. Sure they didn't want to talk with an eastern tenderfoot pest. Just observed.

The stands are empty. Only about 75 people here,...

Then saw the marquee sign ; NOT a rodeo. It's a horsemanship clinic / class / workshop / training of about 3 dozen riders.... about 6 at a time in the training ring.... and it's Buck Brannaman teaching. Buck is world famous,... and is an honest to god Horse Whisperer ! I went by and talked w/ a couple of cowboys a minute while everybody was getting their horses saddled getting started...; good guys. Didn't know 'til later when I saw him teaching / talking... I was talking w/ Buck. He's the real deal. Nice guy. Genuine. Think Gary Cooper cowboy.

Stuck around long enough to see Buck actually teaching in the ring. Fascinating. I love the West !!!

I listened in the stands for 15 to 20 minutes while Buck worked with riders and their horses. I learned more about life in 15 minutes than during some whole 5 month semesters in college from most professors. Thinking back to college, most... -- the two worst were Duran, and Bonfield -- professors turned out to be functional idiots... self agrandizing frat boy blowhards that were only good at blowing their own horn. I read some of their "published" works,... that were even a further waste of time as they had no real substance ... anything of real use ,... to say. ... and I thought, what a waste of time and resources. What a waste of 35 students time. 2 hours with Buck would have been far more useful. You don't have to have a horse, or ride a horse to learn from Buck. he's my kinda person. Glad I got to see this.
